Also, it's not really necessary to get a controller with faders, one with lots of buttons to map your four decks is enough. A controller like the K2 or similar will make the loading, cueing, looping etc. When getting the DB2 first, you can still load and start the tracks with your mouse, but it's not really practical. The most logical order is first the K2 and then the mixer, or getting all of them together. When you like these, you can still extend your setup with a mixer / DB2 afterwards. Lots of pre-made mappings can be found online. They are not expensive new (around 230 EUR/$), using 4 decks is possible too. Here's an example, using two decks and the K2. The 96 is newer and expensive, but it gives you another idea of the capabilities.Ī cheaper option to get started is an Allen & Heath K2, which is a midi controller and mixer in 1. Her's someone using a Xone 96 with the K2. The three together will cost you something. Browsing tracks, loading, cueing, looping etc, effects too. Similiar like in this video, all handling in Traktor is done with the two F1 controllers. My mate is using a Xone PX5 with two Traktor F1's. If you're only using two decks one is enough, using 4 decks two controllers is recommended. The ideal setup is the DB2 with one or two midi controllers. If you like effects, you won't use those available in Traktor. I repeat, the Xone DB2 is an old mixer, but very capable. I'm mostly using Allen & Heath stuff, so I don't know much about the other brands.

They’re usually cheap on the aftermarket, and they can play stems, which is becoming a more interesting option with stem separation software that creates Traktor-ready files.ĭepending on your level which based on your question is beginner, the options are numerous. The D2s might be good as players, they’re decent for browsing tracks and as fx controllers. So if you’re going for a mixer, I’d venture that the A&H 96 is the best bet imo, better if the sends can somehow route to the Traktor fx section. The same would be true with some of these mixers of course.īut in terms of rational layout and ease of use for traktor, the S4 is still by far the best, especially because of the FX section. The “soundcard” connects directly to the soundsystem. My S4 sounds better with traktor than if I set the pioneer CDJs at the club as traktor controller/outputs, simply because the signal path is shorter from the S4. The need for a high-end analogue signal path doesn’t really make sense with a digital sound source. Honestly, a lot of mixers are aimed at vinyl purists. Two sends per channel is very appealing.īut you have to be pretty well into hardware to make use of it, not a lot of outboard gear exceeds the built in traktor stuff, especially in ease of use and beat sync.

I wouldn’t want one though, since its design is full of pioneer legacy decisions, like that fiddly confusing and un-intuitive fx section, which makes no sense when you’ve used the Traktor FX panel. The pioneer 900 is THE standard club mixer, getting a feel for it has its benefits. The DJM V10 has every dj mixer feature ever, but also that bloody 4 band EQ, although the on-channel filters and extra send dial do make up for it. I don’t love rotaries, the 2015 is the only one I’ve truly enjoyed using. The huge dials for eq are a big plus, it sounds ace, and has just enough of everything you need.Ī&H tend to be overcrowded, and their 4-band EQs are much harder to use than the standard 3-bands. If you want to build a set of gear with outboard fx and such, it looks awsome.

The Richie Hawtin one has been mentioned. I have to state that as a mixer, I’m happier with my S4 mk4 than the current top Pioneer one.Īnything beyond that would be pretty expensive and special. Im kinda looking into this myself, form most of what I have seen, Allen and Heath seem to be the way to go, I personally want to do the 6 channel mixer because I want to add something more to what I already have, so I am debating the 96 or 92 of the xone mixers, but right off the bat, since we are probably going to do something similar, invest in two NI x1 controllers, (alternative is the xone k2 controllers which are native to Allen and Heath mixers), get a 4 channel mixer either 43, 43c, or px5, there are a few videos I found that explain some setup routings for such devices, since your just 4 channel, there shouldn't be much excruciating setup, hopefully, and if you really, really, want to go all out, there is a "model one" mixer with 4 channels only that just got released not too long ago, which is also made by Allen and Heath under Richie Hawtin's "Play Differently" who mainly uses traktor, who before the model one, used the 96 mixer, though he now has the one and only 10 channel model one mixer (its the one he uses for his close shows) as he adds live synths, fx sends, and live drums on top of the 4 channels from traktor, hope this give some insight to some ideas.
